New Waste & Minerals Site Plan adopted (February 2017)

The council’s plans for a new Waste & Minerals Site have been adopted (February 2017). They have allocated a nearby site at Sussex House Industrial Area and noted the following:

“Sackville Road and part of Old Shoreham Road, which are in close proximity to the site, are part of the Brighton, Portslade and Rottingdean 2013 AQMA. Waste management uses may not have a materially different effect on the AQMA compared to other industrial uses. However, proposals should consider the potential for issues relating to air quality, including those relating East Sussex, South Downs and Brighton & Hove Waste and Minerals Sites Plan – Schedule of Suitable Industrial Estates (Adopted February 2017) to vehicle movements, which may affect air quality. Operators may also wish to consider entering into routing agreements. Where appropriate, suitable mitigation should be provided.”

History of the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum’s campaign:

refuse-bin-no-wasteIn December 2015 the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum presented a formal objection to the council’s plan to designate the Coal Yard (adjacent to the Sackville Trading Estate) for waste management purposes.

Below is a copy of the Forum’s objection, which was submitted on 23rd December 2015. The objection was backed by our public petition with just short of 700 signatures. In fact with the 15 people who signed online later that day, the petition reached a total of 704.

Our petition against the council’s waste management site

On 17th March 2016 the Brighton & Hove City Council (Policy & Resources Committee) noted the forum’s objection to the plan (the full title of the plan is The East Sussex, South Downs and Brighton & Hove Waste and Minerals Sites Plan).

The council debated the plan and submitted their amended draft plan with ‘main modifications’ to the Inspector, who will make a final decision as part of the forthcoming Public Examination process.
