Sackville Conway Community Hub CH2

Do you want to improve the public realm in front of the Honeycroft centre, create a pocket park near north of St Barnabas Hall or plot footpaths from Poets Corner to Hove Station? Yes? The Sackville Road – Conway Street Community Hub Group needs you! All these organisations and enterprises operate in a run-down environment, yet they provide vital community services and jobs. The council-owned tower blocks have recently been refurbished – this needs to be followed by  improvement to their immediate environment. Join the Sackville-Conway Neighbourhood Planning Group and help to shape the future development of your neighbourhood.

This transformation would need inputs from all the community organisations and local businesses in a collaborative process which would build beneficial links between them. A vibrant community hub would draw more people into the area; as customers, users of community services and as additional volunteers.

The involvement of local organisations and residents in developing a Community Hub Improvement Scheme is essential. It’s a practical way of engaging many more residents and recruiting new members to get involved in the Neighbourhood Plan.

The opportunity

The catalyst for this transformation is the large-scale redevelopment by MODA of the former Coal Yard on the north side of the railway line – the Sackville Regeneration Area – and the continued redevelopment of the Conway Street Area. Hundreds of new residents will come to live within easy walking distance of this proposed hub.

For many of these newcomers, the nearest convenience shops will be those in Sackville Rd adjacent to the Salvation Army. It’s clear that many new residents would benefit from easy access to community facilities in the proposed Community Hub.

Similarly, as the redevelopment of the Conway Street industrial area moves west from the redevelopment of the Furniture Village warehouse, incoming residents will benefit from a transformation of this rundown end of Conway Street.

What if…

An imaginative urban design and a combination of modest public and private sector investment could transform the area into a focal point for local residents.

A Sackville Road – Conway Street Community Hub Group was formed in summer 2017 involving most local stakeholder organisations. Ideas for improvement include:

  • Upgrade the public realm immediately in front of the Honeycroft making it a pleasant informal recreation area;
  • Create a second green space to replace much of the unused road north of St Barnabas Hall – maybe a ‘pocket park’;
  • Create an improved network of footpaths in and out of the area – given it is a route for people from Poets Corner to Hove Station.

Actions so far…

Since summer 2017 the Group has had four meetings

It includes 8 stakeholder organisations and businesses and has worked with Forum architects to produce sketch schemes.

The Group includes the owner of the Decon factory who wishes to redevelop his site and is looking for an alternative location to expand the business. We are also contacting the Council Housing Department which own all the other land in the Hub.
